I couldn’t see anyone but Jerry as the Beaver. Him and Tony Dow seemed like real brothers and I watch the show every day.Hugh as the dad was perfect as was the rest of the cast. There will never be shows like that today. I often wondered if Jerry was really friends with Larry as they seemed to be real friends. All the best to Jerry.

  • Estell Sekula says:

Hi, 🙂 I am so happy that I grew up in that era! I believe I am more so now, thinking back to that time. I have sadness in my life now, and worry, ….who doesn’t, right? but, I would not want to grow up now with all I see and hear about so many issues. Your show did me good, I laughed, I cried, I learned self value and integrity. Thank you Jerry, love to give you a hug. Estell Sekula

The moral of that story is to always tell the truth. I bet it has served you well since those Boy Scout days!

  • Lisa Perry says:

Very interesting Jerry! I love hearing these stories about your younger days……

    • James Corzine says:

All 3 of our kids are in the U.S. Marines. LCPL Kenneth Corzine U.S.M.C was K.I.A. 12-24-2010. Kenney & I watched Leave it to beaver the entire time he was growing up, I sent him the DVD’s of Leave it to beaver and he and the other guys in his small unit watched them over & over. He talked about the show were Beaver & Larry got caught in a stolen row-boat in last letter he wrote & mailed home just hours before being K.I.A.

What a sight to see; a group 18 to 23 year old combat Marines setting around watching Beaver, not once or even twice, but every time they had down-time.

      Thank you.

  • Ann Schweig says:

  • Frank Calomino says:

Great interview. i am the same age as Jerry and grew up feeling that i was part of the show. The character and I were much alike and I got lots of ideas from the show that sorta got me in trouble. Thanks jerry for taking the job! The show would never had gotten past the pilot with any other actor!

  • I love Leave it to Beaver. I have the DVD set. Even though I’m 40 Wally and Beaver had the same trials that I did as a child. I have it on and my nieces refer to it as grey Tv. But they always end up sitting down laughing. Because it is similar to something they had experienced. Thank You, Jerry for having such an impact on so many people.

  • Steven Mark Pilling says:

That story about your “Beaver” audition process remarkably resembles those I’ve heard from others who’ve negociated the “cattle call” process. That Cub Scout deal, however, was a new twist!

  • gloria valeriano says:

well, weren’t you lucky. i always loved the show. mostly because of barbara billingsley and hugh beaumont

  • That was great! I like your story ,about becoming the “beaver”. Very interesting. I’m glad I tuned into this!
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS INTERVIEW:) LOVED THE SHOW ,TOO!

    • Todd Patterson says:

The whole series worked because it was written through the eyes of a very sincere and bright young boy. And you were the perfect choice, Jerry. Thanks for enriching my childhood…and adulthood, through your work. Continued blessings and good health.

    • Charles West says:

I always like to hear about Jerry Mathers. I met him when he was filming the new Leave it to Beaver in Orlando. I am glad I found this sight.

  • William Bradley says:

What a delight to see this interview. I used to run home from elementary school to watch LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. If I was bad my punishment was, I could not watch LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. I learned very early, if you really like something, don’t tell anyone, that way it won’t be taken away from you. I can still hear my mother saying “why can’t you be more like Beaver” ?

  • Becky says:

Thanks for this, Jerry. I am 53, and have loved Leave It To Beaver all my life. You ARE a national treasure. (And congrats on your grand baby!)

  • Kent moss says:

Great article, I met you at central mall in port arthur, Texas back in the 90s I got you picture autographed and still have it hanging on my wall with all my other celebrity pictures still love the beaver.

  • John Linton says:

I love you Jerry . I’m 53 years old and I grew up watching you and your T.V. family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. What is your favorite episode? Mine is the bowl of soup.

  • Thank you for sharing. I still think back then we had the best TV shows. I like when you tell us how it was for you growing up on and off the show. I am still watching even if I have seen them many times. Thanks again.

  • I love the true story of the way kids think! That’s what made Leave it to Beaver the wonderful Show Show it was and still is today a real feel good show. Lifts my spirits. It is the best show of all times.

  • Joeann Parziale says:

Loved the show growing up and never missed it. Still like to see reruns even if my kids laugh at me, they just don’t know what GOOD TV SHOWS ARE, generations changing for the worse as far as I’m concerned. My favorite episode was when Beaver went to see Gus the Fireman cause he was going to the Amusement Park with Wally, Eddie and Lumpy and was scared of course cause Eddie was scaring him. Then Gus told Beaver about having to jump in a net from putting out a fire and told him to remember, ” GUS IN THE NET” and that’s all Beaver said while he was on the Roller Coaster, GUS IN THE NET, GUS IN THE NET!!! He was fine on the Roller Coaster and Eddie Haskell GOT SICK AND TURNED GREEN!!!! Great show and miss them all…..

  • Mary House says:

  • Hi Jerry, I just watched and listened to both of your interviews and I just thought it was so cool hearing you tell the stories in recollecting what happened back when you were little. I also have a good memory and stories need to be passed on from our childhood. Thank you for sharing that looking forward to some more stories from the set of leave it to beaver I’m a little bit younger than you but I can remember watching leave it to beaver before I headed off to school and once they finally started playing them on TV land I was able to see the whole episodes because of course we didn’t have one of man’s greatest inventions , in my opinion, the DVR back in the day. CTOS. Cheers to old-school 😊💋❤️, From a Fan and a Friend. Diane

  • Paul Adams says:

Hi Jerry, My name is Paul. As a Child I was Physically and Sexually abused. However, on Weekends, for a half Hour I was able to “excape” the Pain. I want to thank you for that.

  • cheryl odom says:

My husband and I are still watching you on Leave it to Beaver!!! I don’t care if we’ve seen them before, they are always so entertaining. Every once in a while there might be an episode that we don’t remember, not very often. Thank you for the interview about your audition for Beaver. You were an All American family, our family!!

  • Fred Goodwin says:

Cub Scouts used to be such a big part of American life and culture — sadly that is no longer the case. I’d be surprised if, in 10-15 years, people will even know what Mathers is talking about when he mentions “Cub Scouts”.

  • stephen Scofield says:

  • Shirley Layton says:

I took an early retirement to help my Dad take care of Mom. She’s 86 years old and has advanced Parkinson’s. She can barely talk and can’t swallow. She has a feeding tube because she can’t eat anymore. This morning, as every morning, when asked what she’d like to watch, her response was “Beaver”. I’m glad that I love the show too! Throughout the day, she’ll watch other shows but Beaver it what she watches every morning and every night!

  • Patricia Cromwell says:

Thank You for letting us know how you were selected as “The Beaver.”. We have always loved that show. In fact; my husband has a photo of himself when he was a teenager and we call it (His Wally Cleaver) phase. He looked a lot like Tony Dow back in the day. We still watch your show. It’s nice not to be afraid of what you are going to see or hear. God Bless You and Yours.

  • bob waltenburg says:

stuck in the bowl on the sign how funny,my sister your wife friends senior center. great show by all of you

  • Matt Hanist says:

Thank you for sharing the wonderful story about the audition and how your interest in being a Cub Scout landed you the spot because of your genuine honesty.

I’m 73 years old and have loved watching LITB for literally most of my life. I seem to remember watching it way back when I was a young teen. It has always been very refreshing. I loved doing outside stuff with my friends like hiking and fishing and just doing fun kid stuff when I was 8 – 15 years old. So when I started to watch the show it reminded me of instances where I might of gotten into a little jam and had to explain to my Mom and Dad – but of course nothing very serious. I’m going to see if my local cable company is showing LITB on any of it’s retro channels. I surely hope so because no matter how many times I’ve seen an episode I still always get a good laugh! Thanks again, you are really a nice person.
